No matter whether one is simply hitting the trails for fun or taking part in a race, they must be equipped with a proper kit. As  Steven Rindner says, unlike road running where carrying water shall be enough, for a trail run, runners would need to pack a few extra things, in case the conditions suddenly change or one needs help.

Trail runs takes place out in the open, in the heart of nature. Hence, naturally one is unlikely to find many people on the path to ask for help. Hence, it is better to carry a few essentials on the run. Trail runs involve uneven terrains, which can even be wet and muddy, increasing the injury risks. There is also a risk of getting lost in the trails, and may cause people to take much longer to complete their run than they had originally planned. Hence, it is important to be prepared with the things one may need. Many trail races have a list of mandatory kits that all runners should take with them.

Things one should consider carrying on a trail run are:

  • GPS watch, if possible, with an updated route
  • Fully charged mobile phone
  • Waterproof jacket or some other extra layer
  • Water
  • Nutrition in the form of gels, chews, energy drinks or snacks
  • First aid kit
  • Toilet paper in a small plastic bag
  • Means of payment
  • Fully charged head torch or body torch in case there is a chance that it will get dark before completing the run

As Steven Rindner mentions, when preparing for a trail run that requires minimal equipment, one can choose to carry a running belt or a pair of half tights with built-in leg pockets. In fact, combining both can significantly increase carrying capacity while maintaining a minimalist setup. This approach allows runners to bring along essential items like water, nutrition, a phone and a lightweight windbreaker, without requiring a full running pack. For certain runners, especially those who are taking part in shorter trail races or marathons under favourable conditions, this setup would be sufficient. However, carrying a basic setup is only enough if a runner is experienced, the weather forecast is stable and the trail route includes numerous aid stations. Otherwise, carrying additional gear would be a smart choice.

For the majority of trail runs, particularly those in remote or mountainous areas, a hydration vest or running pack is a much more practical option. Although these packs may initially appear bulky, well-designed models are in fact quite the opposite. They tend to be secure, ergonomically built, and designed for comfort during long efforts. They allow runners to carry a significant amount of gear, including hydration, layers, food, and safety items, making it perfect for extended or technical adventures.

For athletes who regularly engage in trail running, investing in a high-quality running pack shall be a smart decision. These packs come in various volumes, and hence one can easily find options perfect to the length and intensity of their run. Runners tackling shorter trails can usually manage with a more compact 5-litre version.
